The French Language Proficiency Test (IRN version: Integration, Residence and Nationality) is a certification recognised by the prefectures of France.

This certificate of French language proficiency is valid for two years:

  • for applications for naturalisation (level B2 from 2026),
  • for obtaining a long-stay residence permit from the Prefecture (level B1 from 2026),
  • for validation of level A1 as part of the OFII citizenship pathway.

Prerequisites

A minimum interval of 20 days must be observed between two TCF sittings.

Test structure

The TCF IRN consists of 4 compulsory tests assessing general French language skills:

Listening comprehension test: 25 multiple-choice questions (4 answer options, one correct answer). Duration: 20 minutes.
Reading comprehension test: 25 multiple-choice questions (4 options, one correct answer). Duration: 35 minutes.

Writing test: 3 exercises. Duration: 30 minutes.

Speaking test: face-to-face with an examiner: 3 exercises. Duration: 10 minutes.

Important information to note

  • The TCF is not an online test.
    It is a programme installed on the computers at the examination centre.
    You must therefore be present in person to sit the test.
  • Results are sent by email within 2 to 3 weeks of the exam.
  • The results certificate is valid for 2 years.

Candidates with disabilities requiring specific adjustments must:

  • provide a medical certificate,
  • no later than 48 hours before the exam date.

Postponement is possible in the event of illness or a major, justified impediment, and will be accepted if the request is made at least 7 days before the exam. Postponement to a later session subject to availability.
No refund or postponement will be granted in the event of absence without valid justification.
