French Civic Exam
From 1 January 2026, the civic exam will be required for those applying for a multi-year residence permit (CSP) or a residence card (CR).
First of all, what is the civic exam?
This exam aims to assess the candidate’s knowledge of the principles and values of the Republic, the Republic’s system of government and the functioning of French society.
My registration step by step
Step 1
I register at: https://test-civique.fr/inscription
To prepare for this exam, I can contact the OFII or visit the official civic education website to prepare on my own: https://formation-civique.interieur.gouv.fr/. I can also practise using the official lists of questions, available for each version of the exam (CSP – multi-year residence permit, CR – residence permit).
Step 2
I pay for my civic exam on the Alliance Française website.

Step 3
The Alliance Française receives my application and confirms the date I have chosen on my profile (on the website https://test-civique.fr/inscription).
I confirm this.
On the day of the exam
I arrive at the exam with my ID, as well as my test-civique.fr username and password
Postponement is possible in the event of illness or a valid reason for absence, provided the request is made at least 7 days before the exam. The exam may be rescheduled for a later session, subject to availability.
No refunds or rescheduling will be granted in the event of absence without a valid reason.
